Adopting a portion of the St. Joseph River and adjoining streams can be a rewarding experience. However, there are hazards associated with the various activities that need to be recognized and avoided.
CLEANUP SAFETY
DROWNING
Personal flotation devices (PFDs) should be worn.
Do not attempt to canoe during high water conditions unless experienced.
Be familiar with and follow canoe and water safety rules.
PHYSICAL HAZARDS
Use of leather and plastic gloves is recommended.
Washing before meals and bathing with soap and clean water following
each day of activity is recommended.
All material should be handled with care to prevent cuts or puncture
wounds.
If cut, seek first aid treatment and medical attention as appropriate
to minimize the risk of infection.
If syringes are found, do not handle unless you are wearing protective
gloves. Place the syringe inside a container previously collected
such as a metal can, glass bottle and/or a cardboard box before
placing into the plastic bag.
CHAINSAWS
Operators should be experienced adults only!
DRUMS AND BARRELS
Do not handle unless properly trained and equipped.
Record information regarding origin, ownership and contents from
labels or identifying markings.
Note the location of the drum as accurately as possible and advise
FRIENDS OF THE ST. JOE if barrels appear to contain chemicals
or hazardous materials.
