PROVIDE GOOD PUBLICITY (RIVER PARTNERS AND YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY ACCOMPLISH THIS IN PARTNERSHIP.)
SELECT A SET TIME AND LOCATION FOR THE CLEAN-UP.
SELECT A SECTION OF THE RIVER WHICH NEEDS CLEAN-UP.
Make sure it is accessible.
Banks should not be too steep or dangerous to walk upon. People should not be in locations where they can slip into the river.
Provide plenty of heavy trash bags.
Encourage people to bring their own heavy leather or rubber gloves for protection. Cloth gloves absorb water and do not work well.
Anyone on the water should have a life preserver and be an experienced boatsperson. Water is high and dangerous in the spring.
Provide a central location(s) for trash bags to be dropped for easy pick-up. Local park areas are one possibility.
Pre-arrange for pick-up of trash. The local city or township parks or utilities department are usually quite cooperative. Otherwise, call the Friends of the St. Joe office, and we will arrange for pick-up with a truck.
PROVIDE WATER, SOAP AND TOWELS FOR PEOPLE TO WASH BOTH DURING AND AFTER CLEAN-UP ON SITE.
Provide band-aids and first aid ointment at the site.
